In medical imaging workflows, it is sometimes necessary to correct or reassign a set of images (a DICOM study) to a different test or accession number. This can happen due to data entry errors or changes in patient tests.
The Manage DICOM Exam page provides an administrative tool to perform this critical function, ensuring that imaging studies are correctly associated with the appropriate patient and order information.
An Accession Number is a unique identifier assigned to a patient's study. It serves as the primary link between the booked test, the images captured, and the test worksheet. This process allows an administrator to link an existing DICOM study to a new or corrected accession number.
Step-by-Step Guide to Reattaching a DICOM Study
Follow these instructions to locate a DICOM study and attach it to a new accession number.
1. Access the DICOM Study Management Page
To begin, navigate to the admin tab of the interface:
- Go to Admin >> Manage DICOM Exam.
2. Search for the Study
The first step on the Manage DICOM Exam page is to locate the specific study that needs to be reassigned. You can search using one of the following criteria:
- Accession Number: The unique identifier originally associated with the exam.
- Exam Date: The date on which the imaging was performed.
- Patient Name: The name of the patient who underwent the exam.
Enter the relevant information and execute the search.

3. Select the Correct Study
Once the search results are displayed, carefully review the list to identify the correct study.
- In the search results, under the section labeled Step 1, click the Select button next to the desired study.
- Clicking "Select" will automatically populate the unique Study ID of that exam into the fields in Step 3 on the page.
4. Find and Format the Accession Number
Before attaching the study, you must correctly identify and format the new accession number.
Please Note: The Accession Number has a specific format: AppointmentID_TestID.
- This information can be found in the URL of the exam's Worksheet page.
- It is critical to use an underscore (_) between the Appointment ID and the Test ID, not a hyphen or any other character.
5. Attach the Study to the New Accession Number
With the Study ID loaded and the correct Accession Number identified, you can complete the reattachment process.
- Navigate to the section labeled Step 3.
- In the field labeled Add to Accession, enter the new Accession Number, ensuring it follows the "AppointmentID_TestID" format.
- Click the Attach button to finalize the process.
After clicking "Attach," the system will associate the existing images and their unique Study ID with the new accession number you have provided. This ensures the imaging exam is correctly linked to the proper order in the system.
